PE
PE develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence, and we encourage pupils to apply these skills across a wide range of activities. At Horsenden, we believe that the self-discipline, resilience and collaboration developed through sport and PE can have a positive impact both in and beyond the classroom. PE helps pupils develop a positive work ethic, optimism and important transferable life skills.
The aim of our PE curriculum is to:
-
Promote the benefits of physical activity across the whole school community.
-
Improve pupils’ self-esteem and confidence through participation in physical activity.
-
Help pupils understand the link between physical activity, healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.
-
Develop a broad range of physical skills that can be applied to sports, games and other activities over time.
-
Develop social, emotional and thinking skills linked to game play, teamwork and individual practice through S.E.T skills.
-
Promote and celebrate sporting participation and achievement.
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils have access to a broad and balanced PE curriculum, including pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as those with particular strengths in PE and sport. Teachers ensure that all pupils have fair access to the PE curriculum, regardless of gender, race or ability.
Pupils are entitled to regular high-quality PE provision each week. This is delivered through a combination of specialist teaching, class teacher-led PE and swimming.

Personal Development in PE: S.E.T Skills
Our PE curriculum includes S.E.T skills, which support the development of pupils’ Social, Emotional and Thinking skills alongside their physical development.
Each PE unit includes specific personal development skills, such as communication, kindness, cooperation, resilience and the use of tactics. These skills are developed progressively through lessons and help pupils to achieve PE objectives while also strengthening wider personal and interpersonal skills.
A detailed overview of the S.E.T skills taught within each phase can be found in the curriculum documents below.
Before and After School Sporting Opportunities
We offer a range of before and after school clubs which provide pupils with additional opportunities to extend and enhance their experiences of PE and sport. We review our provision using attendance information and pupil feedback, and some clubs are offered free of charge to help increase participation and ensure wider access.
Sporting opportunities may include:
-
Elite swimming
-
Elite water polo
-
Football
-
Multi-sports
-
Tennis
-
Dodgeball
We continue to review and develop our extracurricular sporting offer throughout the year.
